ORGANIC PRODUCE, AND OUR PRODUCE DEPARTMENT
Organic produce is grown without the use of chemicals, many of which are petroleum based. These chemicals used on regular (non-organic) produce can remain in or on produce after the crop has been harvested. This is why many consumers feel that organic is a healthier option – healthier for your family, our world, and the future.
At Philbrick’s Fresh Market, we now have a wonderful array of organic fruits and vegetables – the most extensive in the area. As the New England growing season gets started, we will also offer a great selection of locally grown produce. We all look forward to fresh Fiddlehead ferns to start things off!

This month’s feature cheese:
Maplebrook Farm Mozzarella – from Bennington, Vermont
Maplebrook Farm employs local citizens and purchases milk from neighboring Vermont farmers, while maintaining its commitment to produce cheese that is pure, natural and free of hormones or preservatives.
Maplebrook Farm was founded in 2001 by a third-generation cheese maker, trained in the old world method of hand-making cheese, and by an accomplished Italian chef. These two founders had a vision of producing the finest cheese, utilizing the same methods as those implemented by their ancestors over 1,000 years before.
Maplebrook Farm Mountain Mozzarella is made entirely by hand, with minimal handling to best achieve optimal flavor and perfect consistency. This careful attention, combined with the purest of ingredients, and no preservatives or additives, makes for a cheese that is bursting with true, natural and delicate flavor of the cheese itself – without any added salt!
Sample Maplebrook Farm Mountain Mozzarella in our store on April 19.

“GLUTEN-FREE” AND PHILBRICK’S FRESH MARKET
Stop by our Courtesy Counter and ask for a list of the Gluten-free items you’ll find throughout Philbrick’s Fresh Market. We have an extensive selection. As our way of helping understand more about foods labeled Gluten-free, here are a few facts to know:
Food and product labels that say “Gluten-free” can mean a variety of things. Gluten-free does NOT always mean the complete absence of wheat, barley, rye and oats (WBRO).
- Gluten-free foods may contain one or more ingredients from wheat, rye, barley, oats or their crossbred varieties which have been specially processed to remove gluten and the gluten level does not exceed 20mg/kg (20 ppm) in total, based on the food as sold or distributed to the consumer.
- The allowance of pure, uncontaminated oats may be determined at the national level.
- Foods specially processed to reduce gluten content to a level between 20 and 100mg/kg (20 ppm – 100 ppm) based on the food as sold or distributed to the consumer must not be labeled gluten-free. Labeling terms for such products (eg: low gluten, reduced gluten) and decisions for marketing may be determined at the national level, but must indicate the true nature of the food.
- Naturally gluten-free foods shall be designated “special dietary”, special dietetic” or any other equivalent term, but may bear a statement on the label that “this food is by its nature gluten-free.”
Join Members of the Seacoast Celiac Spruce Support Group, in the store on Saturday, April 12, and sample some of the many fine Gluten-free products available here at Philbrick’s Fresh Market.
